Qatar has reaffirmed its global leadership in mobile internet performance, securing the second position worldwide, according to the latest Speedtest Global Index by Ookla.
The report, which analyzes data from millions of user-generated internet speed tests across the world, measures median mobile and fixed broadband speeds. Qatar’s high ranking is a direct reflection of its advanced telecom infrastructure and substantial investment in 5G technology, aligning with the country’s vision to become a leading digital nation under Qatar National Vision 2030.
The latest statistics show that Qatar’s median mobile download speed reached 517.44 Mbps, while upload speeds stood at 32.95 Mbps with a latency of just 18 milliseconds. These numbers reinforce the nation’s consistent leadership in mobile connectivity.
Qatar’s 5G rollout, led by key telecom providers such as Ooredoo and Vodafone, has been a game-changer. Since launching 5G in 2018, Ooredoo has significantly expanded its network capabilities. The effectiveness of this infrastructure was notably demonstrated during the FIFA World Cup 2022, where 5G download speeds in venues like Al Janoub Stadium exceeded 757 Mbps. Free data packages, including 2022 MB from Ooredoo and 3GB from Vodafone, further supported smooth communication during the tournament.
Globally, internet speeds(both mobile and fixed) are improving as nations continue to enhance digital infrastructure. The Speedtest Global Index tracks these trends by compiling real-time user speed data monthly.
Countries like the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Brazil have also shown strong growth in fixed broadband performance, with Qatar contributing to the trend through its own fixed broadband median download speed of 206.07 Mbps. This level of connectivity supports Qatar’s high internet usage rates and boosts its reputation as a top-tier connected nation.
Qatar’s digital strength plays a key role in its broader economic ambitions -supporting innovation in finance, education, and tourism. The country’s reliable mobile networks have enhanced the travel experience for international visitors and business travelers alike, particularly at airports where strong connectivity has become the norm.
Looking ahead, Qatar’s successful 5G deployment sets a standard that may guide neighboring countries as they continue to develop their own digital ecosystems.
