In the aftermath of the pandemic, the aviation and hospitality industries have welcomed the decision to resume international flights.
On Tuesday, the Indian government announced that international commercial flight operations to and from the country would resume from March 27. The move is in response to increased vaccination coverage against Covid-related diseases.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian government decided to resume scheduled commercial international passenger services after acknowledging an increased vaccination coverage around the globe and discussing with stakeholders.
There are bubble flight agreements between India and 37 countries, including the USA and UK. Bubble flight agreements are temporary arrangements between two countries that aim to resume commercial passenger flights when regular international flight operations are suspended and are reciprocal in nature.
Ronojoy Dutta, director and CEO of IndiGo, said in a statement, "We look forward to connecting our customers to the people and places they love. We will soon be announcing the schedule for our international destinations, in accordance with these new guidelines.β
"This will provide impetus to the economy of the sector and the nationβ, he further added.
In response to the third wave of the pandemic, India recently dropped the requirement for a negative Covid-19 test result report and compulsory quarantine for fully vaccinated passengers arriving from 82 countries.
