Doha, Qatar – QatarEnergy has awarded Samsung C&T Corporation the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a major carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project at its LNG facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The project will capture and store up to 4.1 million tons of CO₂ annually, making it one of the largest CCS initiatives globally. This effort positions Qatar as a leader in large-scale carbon capture and underscores its commitment to responsible and sustainable energy production.

HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy, highlighted the project as a significant milestone. “This initiative strengthens our CCS capabilities and reinforces our role as a reliable provider of lower-carbon energy. All LNG expansion projects will incorporate CCS, with a target to capture over 11 MTPA of CO₂ by 2035,” he said.

He added, “These projects are a key part of QatarEnergy’s sustainability strategy and will substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, supporting Qatar’s National Climate Change Action Plan. We are proud to partner with Samsung C&T Corporation and look forward to the successful execution of this world-scale project.”

QatarEnergy launched its first CCS project in 2019 with a 2.2 MTPA capacity. Two additional projects currently under development will serve the North Field East and North Field South expansions, capturing 2.1 MTPA and 1.2 MTPA of CO₂, respectively.
