Suleiman Obeid, a former captain of the Palestinian national football team and affectionately known as “The Pele of Palestine,” was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza City on Wednesday, August 6, while he was reportedly waiting for humanitarian assistance, according to medical sources.
At 41, Obeid had become a symbol of Palestinian sports and is now among the many athletes and young individuals who have been killed during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has lasted for over 22 months.
He launched his football career with Shabab Al-Shati before joining Al-Amari Club in the occupied West Bank. In 2010, he scored a goal against Yemen and went on to represent Palestine in key international competitions, including World Cup qualifiers, serving as the team’s captain.
