The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has announced the successful completion of a pilot run of electric robotaxis, supervised in partnership with Mowasalat (Karwa). The autonomous vehicles made a round trip between the MOT headquarters and Old Doha Port, marking another milestone in Qatar’s drive toward smart and sustainable mobility.

MOT Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs, Abdullah Saif Al Sulaiti, described the initiative as a pioneering step aligned with the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy. He emphasized that the project integrates advanced eco‑friendly systems into public transport and adheres to the highest international safety standards. Al Sulaiti confirmed that further operational phases will be launched in collaboration with Karwa.

Eng. Nayla Khaled Al Noaimi, In‑Charge of the Road Affairs Department, noted that the successful pilot demonstrates the readiness of operating and technical systems for broader adoption. She explained that the next stage aims to advance toward fully driverless operations, coordinated with relevant authorities to ensure safe deployment.

Hamad Ali Al Marri, Director of the Land Transport Licensing Department, stressed that MOT places strong emphasis on secure, reliable services for the public, while continuously improving transport quality through innovation and sustainability.

Mowasalat CEO Ahmed Hassan Al Obaidly highlighted the company’s commitment to the project, stating that all necessary resources - from skilled personnel and vehicles to advanced software - were dedicated to ensuring success. He added that the initiative aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, aiming to deliver safe, comfortable, and cutting‑edge services to the public.

Phase one of the project, launched in August 2025, included 2,500 autonomous trips under the supervision of trained safety officers. The pilot achieved a 94 percent success rate, surpassing safety targets and earning high passenger satisfaction.

The upcoming second phase will introduce remote operation of two robotaxis without safety officers onboard, across three approved routes: Old Doha Port-The Gate Mall, Souq Waqif-Sheraton Doha Hotel, and MIA-West Bay. Each route will be phased in gradually, with progression contingent on meeting stringent safety requirements.
